Vol. 34 – Orthodontics and traumatic injuries to the teeth
Foreword
Orthodontics is possibly the most complicated discipline in dental traumatology with regard to when and how to treat.
Orthodontic movement can, by its very nature, be considered an induced minor chronic trauma to the PDL used to activate osteoclast activity whereby a tooth can be moved to a desired new position.
Such a process has for a long time been debated how it goes along with healing processes in the PDL induced by acute trauma.
Thanks to a series of investigations there is now good evidence that orthodontic treatment can be performed with a limited risk in most cases under the premises that timing of the intervention is carefully chosen as well as the type of treatment.
This book is based on the authors very broad experiences and a carefull perusal of the extensive literature and the different chapters reveals all the critical issues such as timing of orthodontic treatment after trauma and the critical issue of methodology chosen.
As different types of traumas (fractures and luxations) usually imply different treatment procedures this is also covered in great details.
The chapters are furthermore beautifully illustrated with treated cases from start to end. The authors are to be complimented with this new book on orthodontics and trauma.
It should be a must for the orthodontic profession as well as other specialists treating dental traumas.
