I want to be sincere..this is not the introduction I had written at the beginning.
The text was different: more joyous and enthusiastic as it always happens when you see your work published..but not this time.
On April 18th 2016 Dr. Alfredo Martina left us....He was only Alfredo for me, simply and dearly... therefore, I have changed the whole first part of my text.
On behalf of my father Damaso, of all the Authors and of all the Readers of this series of orthodontic books, I want to thank Dr. Alfredo Martina for what he has done for the Italian orthodontics.
In the scientific community Reserchers and Professors are important: the former think and develop the future, the latter teach it, but most of the time we forget the Editors, who allow us to share our ideas and the education.
The Editors play an important role. Without them everything would be more complicated for us and for our patients.
Thanks Alfredo.... thank you very much for everything.
I am sure you are still working for your next publication!

Let’s go back to us. As Editor I always like to explain why we have chosen this title. The reasons are basically three: the first one: as a matter of fact there are only two phases in orthodontics that are really the same for all the different orthodontic techniques. They comprise the bonding and the debonding of the appliances.

The rest is questionable...including the diagnose (...alas..)

So we had the desire to fill this empty space in our series of books. Bonding and debonding represent two critical moments of our therapy, often underestimated and also delegated.

I have no problem to admit that in my clinical practice I always perform them with great pleasure.

The bonding procedure is critical: it can incorporate mistakes that, in turn, can cause longer treatment time and, maybe, can affect the health of the patient.

The debonding procedure, excluding the critical action of detaching of the brackets, is basically a party for our patients after all the efforts they made...I also want to take part in it..it is like going to your friend’s graduation, with whom you have spent all the years of university.

The second one: we wanted to fill a gap concerning the previous 37 volumes. All the book of this chain are edited in Bologna but we had never published a work in association with the Univerity of Bologna. We apologize for that and we are very grateful to Professor Alessandri Bonetti (I admit I had to focus to write his surname...for me he is Giulio, simply) and to Dr. Zanarini and to Dr. Montebugnoli to allow us to fill this gap.

The third reason: for me it is like a dive into the past....when, in the previous century, a young resident in orthodontics (I, Alberto Caprioglio) was allowed by his Professor of that time (Prof. Giuseppe Sfondrini, that I publicly thank for all the things he has taught me..thanks Professor!!!..I owe it to you) to bring his researches concerning the techniques of thermo electrical debonding at the 68th Congress of the European Orthodontic Society, in 1992 in Venezia..that presentation made me breathe “international” air for the first time. I have never forgotten those days...and now I hope it will be easier to understand why this title is so fascinating to me.

I truly believe that this monography is apt not only to neophytes, but also for the most expert orthodontists, because they will find a few, or maybe a lot of suggestions to improve their clinical practice.

To the Edizioni Martina, a renewed praise and heartfelt thanks for the inexhaustible energy and enthusiasm that you continue to infuse. To the Authors, I really want to congratulate them for the result produced.

As always, I wish you a good read and please remember that our “clinical adventures” begin with a bracket and a composite resin...never forget it and never underestimate it.

In memory of a friend

Dear Alfredo,
This is the last farewell I send to you after almost forty years of friendships.
These last forty years have been very productive in terms of books published; we have now reached the 38th volume of this series, and I still can remember how happy you were every time that a new book was published! It gave you new enthusiasm and so much energy!

Above all, the last forty years have represented a deep friendship that has become deeper and deeper, felt, full of humanity, of joy, of gratification, of cheerfulness and of moments of sweetness, but also of anxiety, of tears, and of confessions that increased in the last years.
How many innovative works from Italian of foreigner authors have appeared in your books!

The Big names, the leading figures of the international and national dentistry had their works edited by your publishing house.

You were a judicious and wise editor, far-seeing, ahead of the times and of the research of the best authors. You had the gift to find talented people, you already knew if their work deserved to be published in your chain, but then you humbly asked the advice of those close friends who knew how to give you sincere advices and make criticism, and only after you took your decision.

I really liked your attitude in battling the difficulties, your obstinacy to reach your target, your self-confidence as a manager, your editorial strategies, but at the same time I was impressed by your kindness, your altruism in helping other people, like young people to whom you almost gave your books as a present, with the aim to motivate them to read, to study, to improve themselves, to grow, creating around them a continuous update and inviting the best international speakers.

Then the difficult times came but I never saw you giving up.

You fought like when you were in the Marines, with determination, braveness, knowing how to suffer silently, always aiming at fighting all the challenges of your life that became more difficult and tough.
You taught me a lot during our weekly telephonic conversations, you infused me braveness and hope, sometimes ending with a note of cheerfulness.

Non omnis moriar! (Not all of me will die!)

Dear Alfredo, you will not be forgotten and your highest and spiritual part will live forever.
Like Saint Augustine said:

The seventh day has neither evening, nor sunset. You too, after completing all your good actions, will rest in the Lord on the Saturday of the eternal life! And you will protect all your dears and all of us from above.

With love and deep emotion.

Your old friend

Foreword

It is my pleasure to have the chance to write a small forward to this addition to a long chain of booklets on orthodontics.

Bonding of “handles” brackets and retainers is a “sine qua non” for the orthodontist who want to apply forces to the teeth with fixed appliances.

The present addition to the chain goes in details with all aspects of bonding starting with the history followed by a thorough description of the two surfaces, the enamel and the base of the brackets.

The clinical procedures are described in detail as is the possible errors in addition to clinical advice of how to minimize the iatrogenic damages.

The book is nicely illustrated and can definitely be recommended to the dentist or hygienist or orthodontists that are starting the bonding procedure.

Even when in some countries only doctors with a dental degree can do the bonding in other countries the procedure is often delegated to the staff.

Whether one or the other is responsible the book produced by Giulio Alessandri Bonetti will be of value as a prerequisite before boarding the treatments with fixed appliances.
